Education & Career

Corbin wants to suceed in life. Like most teenagers in high school, he has big dreams and big plans. "I love computers," he says, "and I want to get into computer science."

Thanks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, Corbin is on his way to success. Through homework help, mentorships, job-training programs and scholarships, the Clubs have eliminated many of the barriers inner-city youth like Corbin face.
How Education & Career Development Work
Whether becoming mechanics, architects, lawyers or doctors, our members need a wide range of knowledge and skills to succeed. As such, the Clubs offer a host of programs, starting with helping young members grow their dreams and aspirations and continuing with opportunities for mentoring, job shadowing and leadership training.

Members also receive the academic support necessary to succeed in life at the Clubs. By promoting literacy, helping with homework and giving members access to computers and books in the Club’s library, members know they have a place to go to get help on homework or scratch their intellectual itch.

A Sample of Unique Education & Career programs

Stein Scholars gives members from disadvantaged backgrounds tutoring, training and mentorship opportunities while they are in high school, and scholarships and financial assistance when in college. The goal is to eliminate the barriers that stop many talented urban teens from succeeding in post-secondary educational settings.

SPARK identifies struggling young readers in kindergarten through third grade and gives them personalized assistance with an early literacy specialist. It also provides them with opportunities to read at home and in the Club – so literacy becomes a life activity, not just a school activity.

World of Work starts by helping preteen members aspire and dream about their ideal career. It continues by giving teen members a chance to explore work and careers – through mentoring, job shadowing or even providing a young person with their first summer job.
